Woman Offers Homeless Man A Place To Stay, Chaos Ensues

A homeless man in Houston, Texas was invited to stay with a longtime friend though he worried about how he would repay his friend for such an act of kindness. Then one night that all changed for Thomas Smith because he would be able to repay his friend in the biggest way possible, by saving her family’s life.

Smith’s friend is a grandmother who lives alone with her two granddaughters, an 8-year-old and a 10-year-old.

He was awoken to “a big old boom” while the family was still sleeping. At first, he thought that a robber was trying to break in, but that wasn’t the case. He opened his friend’s bedroom door and acted quickly.

An explosion in the attic caused the home to go up in flames, and smoke was filling the house. The woman was in her bed, covered in sheetrock that had fallen on her. Smith immediately cleared the debris off of her and brought her to safety, but, her granddaughters were still inside.

Thomas said, “I jumped out the bed and ran to her room, and something was on top of her — sheetrock and what not.”

Although there were fatal threats, nothing was going to stop Smith from rescuing his friend's granddaughters, so he rushed in and pulled the 8-year-old and 10-year-old girls from their beds. He reunited them with their grandmother outside.

“I got them out the house so fast,” he told KPRC2. “There was smoke!”

“I wouldn’t say I’m a hero,” he told KHOU. “I just thank God for helping us all. Not a hero.”

Thankfully, everyone made it out alive, but unfortunately, the home was lost. Smith's friend owned the home for 40 years, but they would not have made survived if not for the heroic homeless man. It seems the grandmother's selfless act ended up saving her life and the lives of those she loves.
