Woman Jailed For Poisoning Her Unborn Baby

Natalie Towers was sentenced to two years and six months in jail for purchasing and taking poison in an attempt to self-abort her unborn baby.

The 24-year-old of Adams Street, Shildon, County Durham, collapsed in court and wailed after she heard her sentence. Mr. Justice Jay of Newcastle Crown Court gave her credit for admitting that she did take the poison, with the intent to miscarry, while she was already 32-34 weeks' pregnant.

Although he added that the immediate custodial sentence had already been passed and could not be suspended. Towers was living with her boyfriend last November when she bought a took the drug known to cause strong contractions.

She called 911 to report she was bleeding. The paramedics saw the baby, head first, in the toilet. Towers said, "It's dead, I know it's dead." While the paramedics did everything they could to resuscitate the baby, it was too late. The court was told that the cause of death was oxygen starvation. The baby was named Luke.
