Woman On Horseback Gets Stopped For DUI

Most drivers are aware that drinking and driving any vehicle is illegal. Doesn't matter if it's a car, truck, motorcycle, golf cart or scooter.

Even people riding a bicycle can get stopped and hit with a ticket if they're wobbly enough. One woman in Florida found out that there are just no exceptions - not even horses.

Donna Byrne was arrested for a DUI while riding her horse. The 53-year-old woman got caught trotting down a busy highway in Polk County on Thursday afternoon. Maybe she thought it would be okay since the horse wasn't under the influence, but Polk County sheriff deputies who spotted the woman on a busy highway didn't feel the same way.

A report first came in from a passerby, who saw the woman on the busy road looking confused. The passerby thought she might have been in some kind of danger.

Deputies drove by to look for her and found Byrne. They had her get down off her horse and observed that she smelled like alcohol. Her eyes also looked red and watery.

Byrne was staggering as she tried to walk so police administered a breathalyzer test. Her blood-alcohol level was .161, which is more than twice the legal limit.

No word on what the horse's blood alcohol level was.

Byrne was arrested and charged with Driving Under the Influence. She was also charged with animal neglect and failing to provide protection for her horse. She's currently in jail pending a hearing.

The horse was confiscated and brought to an Animal Control livestock facility.

"Ms. Byrne was obviously not in any condition to be on the road," said Sheriff Grady Judd. "She not only put herself and the horse in danger but also anyone who was driving on the road, which is typically very busy."

Byrne isn't the first person in Florida who was riding a horse while intoxicated, and probably won't be the last. Charles Cowart in Bunnell got caught on his horse while he was apparently plastered.

It actually ended up in a police chase, and Cowart ended up falling off his horse and trying to run away before police arrested him. Other party people have tried, and failed, to get home after happy hour by letting a horse do the driving, but it just never turns out well.

Some people have tried to get around the 'no drinking while driving' laws by jumping on an unusual mode of transportation: an animal, a lawn mower, horse and buggy, motorized wheelchair... one guy even got busted once for riding his motorized cooler.

According to police, if you've been drinking, just let someone else do the driving. It doesn't matter if it has wheels or legs, it doesn't matter if it's motorized or muscle-powered, it doesn't matter if it's on water or land; if you're getting on something and taking control while you're under the influence of alcohol, you can be charged and get in deep trouble.
