Woman Gets Bug Bite While Mowing Lawn, Terrified After Waking Up Covered In These Spots

An Oklahoma woman was mowing her lawn and got a bug bite. She thought nothing of it and went on with her life, but days later it turned into a dark spot. Then more spots appeared and began to spread. It took seven years to figure out what she had.

The woman, known only as Calvina, stumped doctors when she went for an examination. The single bite she got had erupted into dark spots that ran all the way up her leg. The spots continued to spread all over her body by the time she got to see a dermatologist.

After a biopsy confirmed the spots were not cancer, doctors didn't know what to do for Calvina. She the spots were itchy, like bug bites, and resulted in terrible discomfort. They get hard and crusty, and would sometimes bleed from her scratching. Calvina was embarrassed because people would look at her and avoid her for fear of catching something from her.

Doctors suggested a number of possibilities, from diseases to nerves. No cream, no medication, and no treatment seemed to do any good.

Calvina was so desperate she finally agreed to show up on the television show, 'The Doctors'. After a thorough panel of testing, Dr. Sonia Batra determined that the bumps are the result of two underlying conditions that went untreated: hypothyroidism and urticarial vasculitis.

Hypothyroidism is when the thyroid gland under-produces necessary hormones. Urticarial vasculitis is an autoimmune disease that causes an inflammation of blood vessels. Together, they were causing the itching and lumps.

A doctor in Oklahoma offered to treat the urticarial vasculitis for free, and hypothyroidism is treated easily with a hormone supplement. Doctors believe that in getting treatment for these conditions, Calvina was going to be fine.

“I didn’t think that you guys would hear me,” Calvina says through tears. “But you guys heard me.”
