Woman Forever Changed After Living With Misdiagnosed Disease For 29 Years

In a shocking story, a woman in Minnesota lived for 30 years believing she had cerebral palsy before finally discovering she had been misdiagnosed. Even more disconcerting, it turns out that almost all her symptoms could be cured with a single pill.

Jean Sharon Abbott was diagnosed with spastic diplegia (a rare kind of cerebral palsy) when she was only four years, she explained in an interview. Her symptoms included severe muscle spasms, weakness, and she could barely walk. Abbott also underwent several surgical procedures to improve her symptoms.

Then finally, Abbott found out at the age of 33 that she had a rare condition called dopa-responsive dystonia (DRD) rather than cerebral palsy.

“Honestly, I’ve never had any negative thoughts about what I went through,” Jean said in the interview, although she was stuck in bed for most of her life.

Abbott highlighted that she was fortunate enough to have enjoyed a “fantastic childhood” due to strong support from family and friends.

“Even though I had challenges, my parents were so good with dealing with my disability and didn’t “baby” me,” Abbott pointed out. “Also, I had true friendships that I never had to question. All of my life experiences made me who I am today - and I like me.”

Abbott’s diagnosis of spastic diplegia was even considered a textbook case, although her diagnostic scans did not show the typical symptoms of the condition.

Her neurologist was also well known as one of the best in the field, and second and third opinions had proffered the same diagnosis.

“I had been seen by one of the best in the country, if not the world, and my parents even took me to the leading hospital in the US for a second opinion,” Abbott said. “They confirmed the spastic diplegia diagnosis and said that my doctor taught all of them.”
