Woman Develops Mysterious Black Rash After Bug Bite-Then Doctors Realize Whats Happening

You never do know when your life is going to change. For a woman named Calvina, that day came seven years ago when she was mowing her lawn. She felt something bite her, and she had assumed it was just a mosquito. Being bitten by an insect while doing a little yard work is pretty common, so Calvina didn’t pay it much mind. A few days later, it would start to capture her attention in a big way.

As "The Doctors" explains, the initial bite was on her ankle, but she would develop a dark itchy mark on her arm. That little rash would eventually spread, and she would wind up with similar markings all over her body. Calvina sought medical attention, and she would amazingly bounce around several doctors over a number of years. None of them was able to figure it out. She tried all kinds of different medications, but nothing made much of a difference.

She was at her wit's end, and she had resigned herself to covering up the unsightly marks with long-sleeved shirts and pants. As "The Doctors" explains, she finally reached out to them for help. She would be placed in touch with board-certified dermatologist Dr. Sonia Batra, who would put her through a litany of tests.

“This is the most interesting case I’ve ever seen,” Dr. Batra said.

After some extensive bloodwork, Batra was able to put her finger on what was going on.

“She says the blood work proved Calvina suffers from hypothyroidism, a common condition in which the thyroid gland fails to produce a sufficient amount of necessary hormones. The resulting chemical imbalance can cause a variety of symptoms, including fatigue, unexplained weight gain, constipation, irregular periods, depression and dry skin. If left untreated, symptoms gradually can become worse,” the site explains.

That makes a ton of sense, but why weren’t the other physicians able to figure it out?

“Additionally, Dr. Batra explains that Calvina’s skin biopsies showed she has a rare autoimmune disorder called urticarial vasculitis, which causes inflammation in the blood vessels. The two conditions, hypothyroidism and urticarial vasculitis, easily can explain the severe itching Calvina has been experiencing, Dr. Batra says. She adds that once the underlying disorders, which are both easily treated, are controlled, the prurigo should slowly subside, granted Calvina ceases to pick and scratch at them,” the site continues.

It’s a good thing Calvina reached out to "The Doctors". The show provided her with the attention she needed to get to the bottom of this medical mystery. Sometimes it really can be as simple as a few extra rounds of bloodwork to get to the bottom of things. While she’s on her way to having her problem solved now, hopefully the other physicians she visited will sit down and take a gander at this amazing episode.

“I didn’t think that you guys would hear me,” Calvina said. “But you guys heard me.”

Indeed they did, Calvina, and you’ll be a new woman before you know it.
