Woman Busted Crashing Hundreds Of Funerals For The Free Food

A community in the U.K. realized that an elderly woman who lives alone has attended an unusually high number of funerals over the years. They realized that the woman, originally from Ireland, didn't actually know all the deceased. She crashed funerals for the food.

Theresa Doyle, a 65-year-old pensioner who lives in public housing, found a way to save a few extra dollars on food each month. Instead of buying all her food at the grocery store, she started acquiring a large amount of it at funerals.

Doyle sets out on a regular basis to go to whatever funerals are scheduled for the day, even though the families are complete strangers to her. She changes into her mourning clothes and blends in with the mourners. People usually write her off as a distant great aunt or perhaps a concerned neighbor or coworker. She then goes with the family to hit the buffet table.

"She leaves the house in her bright, daily clothes but tucked into the basket on her bike is a black funeral outfit which she changes into at the church venue," said a neighbor who found Doyle out. "When she arrives at the funeral she changes into the somber clothes, goes to the wake and then helps herself to the food, bringing it back and putting it in her freezer."

"Theresa has been doing this for about 14 years now but the bizarre thing is she gatecrashes strangers’ funerals and is completely brash about it," the neighbor added.

Doyle refuses to be interviewed about her funeral crashing. "That’s my business. I have to go now, I’ve somewhere to be," she said when reporters approached her.

The gray-haired woman apparently spins yarns about how she knew the deceased when people ask her. One grieving mother caught Doyle at her daughter's funeral when Doyle answered simple questions wrong.

Margaret Whitehead was at the funeral of her 42-year-old daughter, Catherine, who died from Addison's disease. "She got my son Kevin to give her a lift from the church to the Irish Centre for the wake. There were a lot of people at the funeral from Catherine’s work so I just assumed she was a colleague. When I spoke to her though she told me she used to work with Catherine as a waitress," said Whitehead.

"My daughter never worked as a waitress," the mother added.

According to Whitehead, Doyle hit the buffet table 'like there was no tomorrow', and when the wake was over the woman stuffed a container full of food. She then took off on her bicycle with her basket full of goodies.

Whitehead thinks it's unconscionable. "There’s Mass every morning, she doesn’t need to go to funerals, she’s only going when there’s a cheap lunch. She intrudes on people when they are upset and sad," she says.

One person who knew about the lady's unusual hobby didn't think she was doing any harm. Father Noel Connolly of the Holy Redeemer Church realized what was going on when he saw Doyle show up at one funeral after another.

"Every funeral we have she comes and if there is a reception afterwards she makes her way to it without invitation," he says. "She is a Catholic woman and she is convinced she needs to go to as many Masses as possible. She has been coming and going since I have been here for the past 14 years. I can’t exactly say ‘you can’t come here'."

Neighbors say Doyle has no fridge or stove, so she can't prepare or store food. She goes out every day to take home something she can survive on that day. She won't talk about her habit, though.

"You can’t talk to her, because she is that sort of person. We have asked her why she does these things, but she just goes blank and doesn’t say anything," said a neighbor.
