A mother’s joy turned into a nightmare when, after leaving a hospital with her baby girl “against medical advice,” child-protection personnel took away the infant.
Cosmopolitan reported that Tiffany Langwell, 38, gave birth to the healthy 8-pound child in August. She and her fiance, David Hodek, enjoyed a memorable first evening with their baby. However, the following day, an employee of the child-welfare agency in Riverside County, California, knocked on the family’s door. In an instant, the child was gone.
Langwell delivered the little girl at Desert Regional Medical Center at 2:34 a.m. That afternoon, she checked out and took her baby home. She said the child was having no problem breastfeeding and did not appear to need any medical care. But because the mother and infant left AMA (against medical advice), a hospital staffer notified the child-welfare agency.
The agency reported that a hospital worker said Langwell was “hostile” in a manner “consistent with someone with substance abuse issues.” The hospital’s marketing director told Cosmopolitan.com: “Desert Regional Medical Center takes very seriously its commitment to the health of mothers and infants in our care. As mandated by state law, the hospital calls the County of Riverside Department of Public Social Services hotline when staff believe the situation warrants a referral. This reporting is not done lightly. Our staff reviews the details of each situation individually before fulfilling our responsibility to refer a case to child protective services for further review.”
