Woman Arrested After Giving Her Toddler To Total Strangers, Saying She "Can't Do It"

Amber Warner, a Florida mother, has been arrested and charged after she allegedly abandoned her 2-year-old toddler with two complete strangers before driving off. The Vero Beach Police Department were called to the bizarre scene after the distraught couple called the police.

The couple had just finished dining and were leaving Kountry Kitchen restaurant, an Old Dixie Highway eatery, early in the morning when Ms. Warner, 31, approached them with her 2-year-old toddler in her arms. It is alleged that Ms. Warner begged the couple to take her son before stating, "I can’t do it,” and placing him on the floor at the couple’s feet. After setting the boy down, Ms. Warner got back into her black truck and sped away, leaving the couple distressed and unsure what to do.

Despite her best attempts to lose her child, Ms. Warner’s location was quickly determined and she was tracked down. Police officers from the Vero Beach Police Department met up with Ms. Warner at her home not long after she abandoned her son. While her son appeared to be, according to police, in “relatively good health”, Ms. Warner was arrested and charged with unlawful desertion of the child. Ms. Warner also faces one charge of resisting arrest without violence after an incident with her arresting police officer on the way to Indian River County Jail.

Ms. Warner was released from the Indian River County jail on a $6,000 USD bond. Her 2-year-old toddler was turned over to the custody of the Florida Department of Children and Families.

Ms. Warner’s case comes just weeks after another Florida mother made headlines after a video of her 1-year-old daughter being struck by a red rat snake surfaced on the internet. Viewers of the video were so concerned for the little girl’s wellbeing that police were contacted with reports of child abuse and neglect.

The Sebring woman, Chartelle St. Laurent, was under investigation by the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office, over the incident after she presented the snake to her daughter in a Tupperware container and laughed when the notoriously aggressive snake struck her daughter on the thumb. Ms. St. Laurent told police that the encounter with the non-venomous snake was meant to be an important lesson in respecting wildlife and exposing her daughter to catching and interacting with reptiles and snakes, just as she had done when she was a toddler. Ms. St. Laurent also noted that she had seen venomous snakes around her property and wanted to teach her daughter the appropriate actions if she ever encountered one.

The 14-inch long snake did not appear to leave any marks or have any lasting damage on the toddler. Ms. St. Laurent commented that “people are too sensitive” before she was required to remove the video from her Facebook account. While the sheriff’s office urged prosecutors to press charges on the woman, it is believed that the charges were not pursued and the case was dropped.
