Wife Horrified When She Discovers Husband Has 60 Children

One man's sperm has really making the rounds. A man who donates his sperm on the internet was discovered to have biologically fathered at least 60 known children. His wife knew nothing about it, but infertile couples have been hearing about the trend. Apparently, internet sperm donations are on the rise.

It's heartbreaking when infertile couples try year after year to conceive children, only to suffer one disappointment after another. A lot of couples would love to use In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) and get sperm from a reputable sperm bank, but they just don't have the money for it.

IVF can cost thousands of dollars per cycle, and some couples have to try several times before pregnancy results. Not everyone who wants to be a parent has that kind of expendable income, so a new market source is opening up to fill the need.

The BBC reports that anonymous sperm donors are offering their product online for much cheaper than traditional sperm banks. There is a catch, however: you don't really have any way to know what you're getting. You will likely just have to take a man's word for it that his sperm has been screened, that he's disease-free and that he has no history of genetic illnesses.

Some men genuinely want to be helpful. One man donated his sperm to a lesbian couple for approximately $40, just enough to cover his travel expenses.

"Clinics do exist that claim to help these women but it comes at quite a high cost and I’ve heard it can run into thousands," the man said. "I think they are taking advantage of a woman’s desire to be a mother and I think that is morally wrong."

For others, there is a darker motive: sex. In one case, an anonymous donor said sometimes he makes the 'deposits' directly into the hopeful mother-to-be. With the consent of the husband, the 'donor' will have unprotected sex with the wife, as many times as it takes, until she's pregnant.

One sperm donor says he was delighted when a particularly attractive woman sought his services. "I thought how did I get so lucky? Because she was gorgeous, we went in the bedroom and [I] give her a massage and there you go. It’s my trademark maneuver."

These encounters, notes the anonymous donor, can happen anywhere. "Sometimes it’s somebody’s home, sometimes it’s a hotel. Sometimes it's a railway station, a pub toilet has been used, McDonald’s, Costa Coffee," he said.

Many sperm donors think that 'natural insemination' is one of the 'perks' of their business.

Aside from the fact that parents are trusting a complete stranger's sperm, there are other problems with this kind of unregulated sperm donating. If a man is spreading his seed far and wide in a country, it's quite possible that it can result in siblings meeting and having romantic relationships some time in the future. One of the security assurances of a reputable, regulated sperm bank is that men are limited in how many children they can father. After a few children are born, their sperm will be 'retired'.

With online, unregulated donations, there are a lot of 'serial sperm donors' around raking it in.

"Currently I have 59 donor babies, seven on the way, my wife doesn’t know anything about it," one anonymous donor told the BBC. "To find out your husband has not got six children anymore, he’s got way over 60, it would be disastrous really. It’s just a secret I have to take to the grave."

No matter how seedy you might think it is, there are a lot of satisfied customers out there. For some couples, it’s their only hope for a child, and they’re willing to take it.
