This Is Why You Should Never Go Barefoot In Public Showers

A Texas man was at the gym and went in to take a shower. He'd forgotten his flip-flops, but he didn't want to return to work all smelly after his workout. He simply went into the showers barefoot. Unbeknownst to him, the public shower was contaminated with a flesh-eating disease. The man suffered a horrible ordeal, and he's now warning other people to keep their shoes on.

The unnamed man had no idea he contracted the infection until he noticed a wart on his foot. After the first one, more were to come: five in total. The man relayed his story anonymously on KTBZ-FM's 'Rod Ryan Show'. He sent in graphic photos to show what he went through.

"Not wanting to impact my training, I let it go and tried to treat it using any remedy I could find online," he said. "I tried duct tape, banana peels, vinegar, and OTC (over-the-counter) acid treatments with no success. It wasn't until after my run approximately six months later that I went and saw someone."

The man, who had been training for a marathon, was diagnosed with plantar wart-- a benign foot tumor. By then he had gaping sores on the bottom of his feet.

The man had to see a doctor weekly to have blisters cut away so the doctor could apply fresh ointment and bandages. The disease just continued to spread.

"My entire foot would swell and the pain was so bad, I couldn't walk. I couldn't even put my leg down as the blood rushing to my foot would cause the skin to swell and put me in excruciating pain," he said.

After several months, doctors tried skin grafts with fish skin. They used the skin of North American Cod fish to help cover up the wounds. They finally started to close, but the man is going to need at least one more surgery before he can start walking again.

"Do yourself a favor, wear shoes in any public area where there is water. This virus thrives in those areas," the man warns. "The scary thing is, the virus can live for over two years on the surfaces as well. Take care of your feet so they can take care of you."
