This Is Why This Kid Was Marked Wrong For Saying 5+5+5=15

A story about students being told their correct answers to math problems were wrong is creating quite a stir on social media.

Tech Insider reported that thousands of Facebook and Reddit users have had plenty to say about it. “I can’t call out the complete insanity of this Common Core math,” one person wrote. “Please explain to me in what CRAZY, BACKWARDS, MAKE BELIEVE WORLD this makes sense??”

Common Core is the federal government’s basic educational requirements for public schools. The system, which describes the math and English curricula all students are expected to learn, has come under fire from conservatives who favor more local control of education.

”If all the parents make sure their kids write the problem out and not give in to the madness, hopefully the teachers will grasp what is wrong with Common Core,” one message stated. Another person wrote: “Exact answer are ALWAYS better that estimation. So we penalize for exact answers. This is exactly why our country is losing so much ground on so many levels.”

Tech Insider noted that a controversy erupted on Reddit last October regarding a pair of math questions regarding repeated addition strategy, which uses addition to solve multiplication problems. “If that’s true, I’d be having a talk with my kid’s teacher,” one Reddit user commented.
