When The Indian Justice System Fails Him Father Cuts Off Hands Of His Daughter's Rapist

In 2014, a 14-year-old was accused of raping the 7-month-old daughter of a father from Punjab, India. On April 19, the 17-year-old finally appeared in court in Punjab, but the hearing was postponed again. The girl’s father, 25-year-old Parminder Singh, reportedly approached the teen and offered to him a ride home on his motorcycle and discuss a settlement. Although, Singh had something else in mind.

The father allegedly tied the teen to a tree, beat him and cut him several times before slicing off his hands at the wrist.

Bathinda police officer Swapan Sharma told the Agence France-Presse, "[Singh] took him near a dried up canal, beat him up badly and then tied him to a tree and finally hacked his hands off. There is nothing below the wrists now." If not for nearby locals, the teen might have died on the scene. Sharma said, "A few villagers heard the juvenile’s cries and ran towards the canal. They found the victim bleeding profusely."

The father fled by the time villagers came over. Sharma went on to say, "Locals alerted police and we rushed to the spot. We picked him up, his hands, and took him to the hospital."

In many sexual assault cases, Indian citizens have sought vigilante justice. The reason is the justice system is notoriously slow and often corrupt. In November 2014, a father reportedly tortured and killed his daughter’s rapist and turned himself into police for the crime.
