When Her Daughter Asked To Go To A Sleepover She Didn't Hesitate To Say Okay - Biggest Mistake Of Her Life

A Redding, California family still mourns the loss of their daughter and sister Shelby almost eight years ago. Shelby died from an alcohol overdose after downing 15 shots of vodka in just a couple of hours.

Shelby was not a big partier. She did sneak around a bit, her best friend Alyssa said, but "she wasn't this wild party girl. Shelby partied like most of us did. She didn't stand out as a troubled or moody kid. She was curious about alcohol — curious about how much she could drink until she passed out, just like many other teens. You just drink until you're out, and then you sleep it off."

One night at a sleepover at Alyssa’s house the drinking got serious when Alyssa’s parents went to bed. Her friends say Shelby's goal that night was to drink 15 shots of vodka. "I honestly don't know why she got that number in her head," Alyssa commented. "Maybe she saw someone do it at a party. Shelby was an athlete [she played volleyball and was on the cross-country track team]; she had a competitive spirit. We all told her it was a bad idea, but she was determined to make that her goal."

Shelby began drinking the shots at 1 a.m. After the bottle of vodka ran out, the girls found another. The drunk teenager took a pic of the second bottle and then tracked her drinking in regular texts to friends.

When the EMTs who arrived, Shelby still had a weak pulse, but they could not revive her. The autopsy determined her blood-alcohol level was 0.33, over four times the legal limit in California.
