Walmart Under Fire For New Display - Customers Aren't Happy With It

In a Panama City Walmart, employees perhaps had their hearts in the right place when they wanted to honor the 15th anniversary of September 11th. Unfortunately, their execution just left a bad taste in people's mouth.

Under a banner reading, "We will never forget," Walmart workers created a display to honor 9/11/01. They created a monument to the twin towers, where nearly 3,000 Americans died. This might have actually been touching if they hadn't created the monument out of Coca-Cola products.

“We stopped and stared at it like, oh my god,” said vacationer Shawn Richard to BuzzFeed News. “Nobody seemed to be noticing it, it wasn’t very crowded, and I got the feeling that it had just been assembled. So we took some pics and went on our way.”

Those pictures have gone viral now, and a lot of people who find the display crude and offensive have chimed in with their two cents.

"This is THE ultimate in brand 9/11 cash-in tackiness and nothing will ever ever ever top it,[sic]" tweeted Natasha Daly.

"i mean actually this is the most American thing i have ever seen, and it makes me want to die slow and painful,[sic]" tweeted 'debbie down n out.'

According to a Walmart spokesperson, it's Coca-Cola that came up with the idea for the display. Walmart store managers do have the right to reject display ideas, but this one was approved by a store manager. The offending display has been removed.

“This display was meant to honor local firefighters and to support their organization’s upcoming event," said the Coca-Cola Company in a statement. "We sincerely apologize that anyone was offended or misunderstood its intent, and we have replaced the display.”
