Walmart Employee Of 20 Years Fired - Community Outraged

Walmart has been phasing out the 'greeter' position, a job that was once mainly held by elderly retirees and disabled persons. In one store in Pennsylvania, customers were outraged that their favorite greeter was fired. They've rallied around him in hopes of helping him get his position back.

Daniel Ockenhouse, 41, was a greeter at the East Stroudsburg Walmart for 20 years. He says he loved his job and he was devastated when his Walmart eliminated the position.

The position of greeter was replaced with a position Walmart calls 'customer host.' The hosting position has more demands than the greeter position did, and Ockenhouse, who has cerebral palsy, could not perform all of the new duties required.

Ockenhouse was reportedly a devoted employee. He's travel two miles by electric wheelchair to get to work, sometimes sleeping in the store overnight when the weather was bad. He didn't want to be late for his shift the next day.

Customers rallied around Ockenhouse when he lost his job. They held a protest with signs that read 'Support Danny' and 'Give Danny his job back.'

According to Walmart, other positions were available, but Ockenhouse didn't apply for any.

"I just want my job back, and I want to be appreciated," Ockenhouse said in an interview with 'The Pocono Record.' "The customers appreciate me."

"We very much wanted Danny to stay with Walmart and the store tried hard to help him find another position in their store and nearby stores; unfortunately, he didn't find an opening that he felt met his needs at this time," said the spokesperson.
