Walmart Clerk Refuses To Wire Man's Money, And The Man Is Very Thankful

When you go to Walmart, you expect the cashier to do the job that they're supposed to do. When you want to make a money transfer, the last thing you want to deal with is a cashier who stands in your way and declines the transaction.

That's what happened to one elderly man when he was trying to transfer money to his grandson after an emergency. Now, the man is very grateful that the cashier stepped in to intervene; she saved him more than $2,000.

Cecil Rodgers, an elderly man from Cincinnati, Ohio, was looking forward to spending Christmas time with his family around him. A few days before the holiday, though, he got an unnerving call.

The caller said he was Rodgers' eldest grandson.

As Rodgers tells WCPO News, "A voice comes on and says, ‘Papaw, this is your oldest grandson. I’m in trouble.’”

“I hit a woman’s car and she was seven months pregnant. And they charged me with drunken driving and I’m in jail," Rodgers says the caller told him.

The grandfather became immediately worried about his grandson.

After talking to another person, claiming to be the grandson's lawyer, for a little while, Rodgers was told he could help if he went to Walmart and transferred $2,300 to another store.

The lawyer said he would pick up the money and use it to post the grandson's bail. The lawyer assured the grandfather that everything would be okay once he got the money.

Rodgers, worried about his grandson, rushed to the nearest Walmart. He went up to the ATM machine and withdrew $2,300, then went to the cashier to send the money.

As he started explaining what happened, the cashier put a stop to the transaction.

Audrella Taylor smelled a rat. “He said something about somebody was locked up in jail, he got a call, and he needed to come in to send $2,000," she recalls.

"I said, ‘Well, I am going to refuse the sender. I’m not going to let you send that money because I think you’ve been scammed.’”

Taylor told Rodgers to calm down a moment and go call his family members. She thought he was going to find out his grandson was fine.

Sure enough, she was right: there had been no car accident. The entire call was a scam.

The 'lawyer' even convinced Rodgers to rush and not call anyone else in the family so the grandson wouldn't be embarrassed. By convincing Rodgers not to call anyone else to ask about the situation, it prevented the older man from discovering the truth.

Rodgers thinks Taylor is a hero, and the Walmart store manager agrees. "We’re very proud of Audrella and all of our customer service associates that helped," said the manager.

Con artists usually have such an easy time scamming people out of their money, particularly the elderly. It’s important for families to talk with elder members about not feeling pressured to transfer money, give up banking account or other personal information over the phone or email.

All it takes is a few minutes to call someone trusted, or contact authorities, to check up on whether or not the situation is legitimate. Scammers prey on people that are easily rushed into action without thinking.
