Walmart Cashier Graciously Helps Nervous Customer, Becomes Viral Sensation

In a perfect world, things such as kindness and patience wouldn’t be anomalies that are only practiced by some. Unfortunately, it can certainly seem that way in today’s always-on-the-go world. We all come across examples of this pretty regularly, as store checkout lanes can at times represent a big old social experiment. Patience can run rather short on the part of both shoppers and cashiers when the line stops moving, and the reaction from some of the folks in line can be quite telling.

As Little Things shares, one of the reactions from a cashier at a Walmart in Mississippi has gone viral. Thankfully, it’s for good reasons. Customer Spring Bowlin was in line, and she was so taken aback by the kindness and patience that the cashier showed for a nervous man that was holding up the process that she just had to share. Her post struck a chord and quickly went viral.

“My heart was warmed at Wal-Mart during lunch. This gentleman's items were scanned and he was given the total. He looks apologetically back at me and starts taking handfuls of change out of his pockets. He miscounts and starts to get flustered. Gives me a muttered, 'I'm so sorry.' His hands and voice are shaking,” she wrote. “This beautiful cashier takes his hands and dumps all the change on the counter and says, 'This is not a problem, honey. We will do this together.'"

In another line and with another cashier, things could’ve turned out quite differently. As a result, the nervous man would’ve become even more rattled, and there’s no telling if those behind him would’ve created a scene as a result of the lack of progress. The cashier saw to it that it wouldn’t be an issue, and she gained a big fan among one of her store’s loyal shoppers while doing so.

“He continues to apologize to both of us as we reassure him it's ok. They get his transaction handled and he shuffles away. I looked at this wonderful woman and said, 'Thank-you for being so patient with him,’" Bowlin’s post continued. “She shakes her head and replies, 'You shouldn't have to thank me, baby. What's wrong with our world is we've forgotten how to love one another.' I want to be more like her.”

Unsurprisingly, it’s the ones that manage to show the most kindness and patience that deflect praise when they receive it for just doing what they feel is right. In their world, this is just the way things should be. There’s no need to get all nasty and whatnot when everything doesn’t work out to perfection, and they’ve learned to go with the flow and accept things as they are. It’s no coincidence that these folks seem a whole lot happier than others as a result.

That’s some interesting food for thought to ponder over. The next time you find yourself getting ticked off in a slow checkout line seems like a fantastic time to do just that.
