Walgreens Employee Gets Fired for Helping Carjacking Victim

John Garcia is an employee at Walgreens who put his life and job on the line on Jan. 1. On that day, he was working when he noticed Lafayette Stone attempting to carjack a woman in the Walgreens parking lot.

Garcia told KOAT, "The lady that was driving the car opened the door, got caught under the door, got drug maybe about 10 feet." Garcia, and a customer, were able to pull Stone out of the car and keep him put until police arrived.

Garcia explained, "I just did what any normal human would do." Unfortunately, his managers saw it differently and fired him two weeks later. They claim he put other employees in danger.

Yet, Stone was arrested for more than just attempted carjacking. Officers noticed that Stone kept putting his hands down his pants. Stone told them, “I’m getting drugs out of my butt." Stone added, “I might have some up my anus."

Officers found a small bag with a white crystal substance and a small bag of black tar heroin. Stone was charged with unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, aggravated battery, controlled substance violation of a schedule 1,2,3 and tampering with evidence.

The good news for Garcia is that on Jan. 15, he was reinstated as a shift manager at Walgreens.

Phil Caruson, of the Walgreens media relations team, said "After additional review, we determined our employee was placed in an extraordinary circumstance and left the store to protect our customers, as opposed to chasing after a suspected shoplifter. Our policies and procedures are designed to protect our employees and customers from dangerous situations, and our team members are trained not to escalate those situations. In this matter, it has become clear that our employee left the store to come to the aid of a customer in danger."

Garcia added, “My job was on the line, but I’m happy to say that I did it."
