Waitress Posts Photo Of Her Paycheck After Taxes And Sparks Outrage Online

Being a waiter or waitress at a restaurant is a tough job. You have to be on your feet for long periods of time, walking back and forth, often carrying heavy loads. You have to deal with people in bad moods or disgruntled customers who didn’t like the way the chef prepared something.

You have to keep a lot of details straight in your head, such as how certain dishes are prepared and which table ordered their BLT without the bacon. On top of that, you have to do it all with a smile—you have to be sociable, pleasant and welcoming to the guests.

While many individuals often are aware of how little waiting staff earns, few people truly understand the paltry paycheck received by waiting staff after waiters and waitresses work for hours on end. Laura Boddy posted a photo of her most recent paycheck, after tax, causing widespread outrage across the internet after people found out how little she was earning.

The photo, which was posted online and has since gone viral, showed a total earning of $1.70. Ms. Boddy had literally received $1.70 for all the hours she worked at a local restaurant as a waitress. The rest all went to taxes. Many people, who originally believed it to be a mistake, were appalled to learn that was actually the amount this young girl was paid.

Moreover, after an initial period of confusion, Ms. Boddy revealed that she received this amount after working for a total of 76 hours. The revelation sparked outrage with a lot of people complaining about the need for minimum wage reform and government intervention.

Ms. Boddy posted the photo in the hope that the image would make the public more aware of how important tipping from customers is to the livelihood of most wait staff.

Ms. Boddy spoke to the ‘Independent Journal’, stating “the reason it was so low was because I was claiming most of my tips at the time. Basically, at the end of a shift, you have to put into the computer system how much you’ve made.” Ms. Boddy told the ‘Independent Journal’ that it was common for the check to come to $0.00 and that the $1.70 was actually a thrilling surprise.

Waiters and waitresses can actually make very good money, but not from their hourly salary. The money comes from the tips. Boddy and a lot of other American servers don’t actually want to do away with the tipping system—nor do customers. People don’t realize it, but if servers got a steady salary instead of tips, the expense of eating out would skyrocket.

Servers just want customers to know that they depend on tips. It’s not just a little gravy on top of their earnings; it’s the meat and potatoes of their career.

While Ms. Boddy has stressed that she isn’t trying to complain about the wage of serving staff, she wished to “make it known to those that have never worked in the service industry before that tips are where… earnings come from.” Many people don’t realize just how crucial a tip can be and hopes that her image will help restaurant goers to be more conscientious next time they decide whether to tip their waiter or not.
