Viewers Furious When They See Who Was Included In Emmy's 'In Memoriam' Segment

When the ‘In Memoriam’ segment of the Emmy Awards began, fans prepared to look back on all the incredible talents Hollywood lost this year. That changed rather quickly.

When the show paid homage to Fox News founder, Roger Ailes, but failed to include an ode to big names like Dick Gregory, Frank Vincent and Charlie Murphy, fans were left with a bitter taste in their mouths. The segment, designed to honor celebrities who passed away in the months leading up to the big night, left viewers confused and outraged at the lack of respect shown to significant celebrities who died recently.

Viewers of the Emmys ‘In Memoriam’ segment were particularly outraged after former Fox News executive, Roger Ailes, was honored in place of more established Hollywood names. Viewers of the award ceremony took to Twitter to express their confusion at the inclusion of Mr. Ailes, who retired from his executive position in disgrace after being accused of sexually harassing multiple women.

“RT [Retweet] if you threw something at yr TV when Roger Ailes came up in the ‘In Memoriam’ montage,” Twitter user Andi Zeisler quipped. Yashar Ali, another Twitter user, also commented on the matter, stating “#Emmys did not include Frank Vincent, Dick Gregory, Harry Dean Stanton or Charlie Murphy but don’t fret, they made room for Roger Ailes!”

Several live tweets have called out the organizers of the awards ceremony for their decision to include Mr. Ailes, suggesting that he could have been left out for someone more deserving and favorable. Despite the criticism, the individuals who organized the montage have not responded.

“Roger Ailes is probably the person most responsible for the current toxicity of our political landscape,” Adam Best wrote through Twitter. “#Emmys shouldn’t have honored him.” The executive producer of ‘The Ellen Show’ was completely befuddled by the inclusion of Mr. Ailes, Tweeting, “We will be loving Roger Ailes always? Really? #Emmys.” In a more comedic tweet, Mark Harris, a columnist at Entertainment Weekly, wrote “Touching shout out to Roger Ailes in hell during the Emmys ‘In Memoriam’ montage.”

To add to the controversy, former White House Press Secretary, Sean Spicer, also made an appearance during the award show. His appearance inspired a tirade of sarcastic and angry comments from celebrities and other viewers alike.

Mr. Spicer, who took to the stage after Stephen Colbert, immediately began a fiery and comedic quip centered around the current American President, Donald Trump. “This will be the largest audience to witness the Emmys, period,” Mr. Spicer joked, referencing his first briefing as Press Secretary under President Trump, where he famously told reporters: “this was the largest audience to ever witness an inauguration, period.”

“Wish I was at the Emmys so I could have jerked off @seanspicer too!” comedian and actor Seth Rogen wrote. Michael Ian Black aptly concluded that “Hollywood just tousled Sean Spicer’s hair.” Despite the division and the controversy, this year’s Emmys went without a hitch. Nevertheless, demographic data indicates that viewer numbers are at an all-time low. It’s possible that the viewership numbers were reduced because of poor TV reception in hurricane-wracked states.
