Veteran Mom Fought For Her Country, Now Fighting Government

Anna Hurst is a military mother from Florida. She joined the U.S. Army to help create a better life for her and her children. In 2009, she was deployed to Afghanistan so, she left her two children in the care of her stepmother.

At the time, her children were 7 and 8 years old. Hurst then fought in Afghanistan and Iraq before she was honorably discharged in 2013. Her mother had since moved to New Jersey with her children where the children ended up in the care of New Jersey's Department of Children and Families because her daughter had discipline issues and her son had become aggressive towards his step-grandmother.

Now, the children are in foster care. Hurst said "I want my kids back. I wanna be with my kids. I've missed so much of their lives serving my country that I don't wanna miss anymore."

The state of New Jersey agrees that the children should be with their mother but requires that the services provided to the children in New Jersey should continue in Florida. Unfortunately, it's taken Hurst years of effort to get to that point. A hearing is scheduled this week to determine if and when Hurst's children will return to Florida with her. Hurst says she wants her children to know that she never gave up on fighting to get them back.
