Veteran Gives Corn Muffin To Homeless Man, Pays For It

A Cracker Barrel manager fired a 73-year-old employee because he gave away a muffin to a homeless man.

The Daily Mail reported that Joe Koblenzer, a U.S. military veteran, had worked at the Venice, Fla., store for three and a half years. He told ABC 7 that when the homeless man entered the business, “he looked a little needy (and) asked if I had any mayonnaise and some tarter sauce.” Koblenzer continued: “He said he was going to cook a fish. I got (the mayonnaise) for him. As he walked out, I put a corn muffin in.”

“The general manager called me in and said he had some bad news for me,” the Vietnam veteran recalled. “‘Joe, we are going to have to let you go.'”

It was not the first time Koblenzer had given away food, according to the restaurant, which reprimanded him on several previous occasions for his generous behavior. He got in trouble one time for giving a cup of coffee to a woman, though he claimed he paid for it.

“It’s a rule,” Koblenzer acknowledged. “They legally can do this because I did break the rule. I completely forgot about it. I am a host at Cracker Barrel with a little above minimum-wage job.”

The man’s niece, Penny Robinson Hockey, declared: “He is truly such a wonderful and friendly guy. He was such a joy to those he greeted at CB. They wronged him in the worst possible way. Shame on Cracker Barrel! I will never step foot into one again.”
