Vet Told Family Their Dog Had Cancer- Then Discovers What It Really Is

A family was worried about their eight-year-old St. Bernard after she had taken ill. The vet performed a CT scan on the dog and found a mass. He told the family he believed she had cancer, and that she would need surgery.

When the surgeon opened the dog up, though, it wasn't a tumor that was found inside the dog; it was some torn-up teddy bears.

Maisy is an elderly dog, so it wouldn't be unusual for her to have cancer. When owner Jane Dickinson from West Yorkshire in the U.K. noticed that Maisy wasn't acting like herself, she made an appointment with the vet. She hoped for the best, but feared the worst.

Unfortunately, after an examination, the vet's news was the worst. Vets believed that the dog had cancer. A CT scan revealed a mass on the dog's spleen and a swollen stomach. The vet advised surgery.

Vet surgeon Nick Blackburn was in the middle of the operation to remove the mass, and the spleen, when he made a startling discovery. Maisy didn't have a tumor; her stomach was full of toys.

"It's fair to say this was not something we were expecting to find!" said Blackburn. "We all know certain dogs enjoy chewing things they shouldn't but managing to devour four full teddy bears is quite a feat."

Apparently, Maisy had ripped into four teddy bears. Mrs. Dickinson didn't even realize that the sly dog was in the habit of eating toys, and she hadn't found anything missing, so it came to a surprise as her as well.

"The toys weren't even hers! She will steal the chihuahuas' toys and play with them but I've never seen her trying to chew them. Her eating habits had been completely normal," she said. "I didn't even recognize one of the toys - my brother also keeps chihuahuas and it turns out it belonged to his dog."

Thankfully, a belly full of teddy bears is a lot easier to treat than cancer. "I know Jane was worried about Maisy as she is quite old for a St Bernard, so we were naturally delighted the operation was such a success and we were able to return a happy, healthy dog to the Dickinsons," said the doctor.

Now that the teddy bears have been extracted, Maisy, a gentle giant, is like her old self again. She made a full recovery, and has no sign of any kind of cancer. The Dickinson family says she's 'loving life' as always.

Pet owners have to watch their dogs and always consider that the pup might have gotten into something it shouldn’t have for a snack. Over the years, vets have found some very strange things inside of the digestive tracts of their patients.

One Great Dane was rushed to the vet and they found the dog had eaten more than 40 socks. Another vet found with an X-ray that a Golden Retriever had swallowed a lightbulb, and the bulb was intact inside his stomach. Another pup liked to suck up stray pennies when her owner wasn't looking. Surgery resulted in the vet extracting $1.29 from the dog's intestines.
