Vet Discovers What Is Wrong With Dog Seconds Before He Is Euthanized

After going on a camping trip, Ollie the Sheltie, ten, of Portland became paralyzed, lethargic and weak. His regular vet did not know why, even with blood tests and X-rays. On May 4, Ollie became fully paralyzed and was unable to eat. His owners, Al and Joelle Meteney agreed to put him down. Instead of taking Ollie to their regular vet, the Meteneys took him to DoveLewis Emergency Animal Hospital. There, Neena Golden, a veterinary student who was getting hands-on experience at the hospital started tickling his ears just one minute before he was about to be put down.

She was trying to comfort him when she found the tick that was causing his troubles. Ollie was wearing a tick collar, but the tick still managed to hang tight. Neurotoxins in the insect's saliva then flowed into Ollie's bloodstream over the course of days, causing 'tick paralysis' - a potentially fatal illness. Mr. Meteney said, "The doctor walked in and remembered that he heard about this in school, He told me it was just one little thing, one slide, and they mentioned it and [that] it was rare, and that was it. He had never seen a case before in his career." The tick was removed, and Ollie was sent home. He was also shaved to make sure he didn't have any other ticks. Al says, "He has a spring in his step that he hasn't had in quite a while."
