Unverified List of Alleged High-Profile KKK Members Released Ahead of Anonymous Leak

Hackers, who claim to be part of hacking group Anonymous, recently revealed names they believe are members of the KKK. More prominent names included Senators Johnny Isakson, John Cornyn, Thom Tillis and Dan Coats. Lexington Mayor Jim Gray, Knoxville Mayor Madeline Rogero, Norfolk Mayor Paul Fraim, Ocala Mayor Kent Guinn and Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry have all dismissed the claims.

Indiana's Republican Senator Dan Coats wrote on Twitter "I have never had any affiliation with the Ku Klux Klan and deplore all forms of racial discrimination. This is baseless Internet garbage of the worst kind."

Many have suggested that the information could be a hoax. Anonymous have even denied they gave the names out - even though they are planning to publish a list of alleged members later this week. They posted on Twitter "We respect the work of our fellow freedom fighters. However, we are unable to confirm, deny or take credit for any work that we did not do." In addition, they wrote "This account has not yet released any information. We believe in due diligence and will not recklessly involve innocent individuals."

Anonymous says they will release details of 1,000 members to mark the one-year anniversary of the Ferguson protests on November 5. Norfolk, Virginia Mayor Paul Fraim said that the report is a "hoax."

On Facebook, Fraim wrote, "People have been spreading a report from the Internet that I am involved with the KKK. This report is a hoax and is absolutely false." Knoxville, Tennessee Mayor Madeline Rogero also wrote on Facebook "'I’m not even sure this is worth responding to, but for the record: There is a list circulating online purporting to “out” elected officials as members of the KKK. For reasons unfathomable to me or anyone who knows me, my name is on the list. Given my background, my interracial family, my public record and my personal beliefs, this would be hilarious except that it is probably being seen by a lot of people who have no idea who I am."

Rogero added "I strongly request that anyone associated with the creation and dissemination of this false and defamatory accusation retract it immediately. It is irresponsible and slanderous."

Fort Wayne, Indiana Mayor Tom Henry also wrote on Twitter "Claims that I have ties to the KKK are totally false and irresponsible. I’m proud to be the Mayor of the @CityofFortWayne. Our City celebrates and appreciates diversity and acceptance. Racism has no place in our society and my life."

Republican Whip John Cornyn of Texas sent out this message, via his spokesman "None of these emails or phone numbers are associated with Sen. Cornyn, and many of the phone numbers can be traced to publicly available phone numbers, like (877) 336-7200, which is the number of contact for the Democratic National Committee."
