University Tennis Player Kicked Off Team For Misogynistic Speech

In many cases, it's good to be honest and to speak your mind. In some cases, not so much. There are definitely thoughts you should keep to yourself sometimes.

Unfortunately, one college tennis player revealed a little TMI when giving a speech at an end-of-the-year sports banquet. People were so offended by his speech that he's been dropped from the team.

Goutham Sundaram, a senior at the University of Portland and former member of the tennis team, was given the honor of hosting the fifth annual Wally Awards on Sunday. He promised to 'get real' and 'make the stage his locker room', and that's just what he did. Some felt his locker room talk was just too much, however.

“Sundaram’s speech detailed his sexual pursuits during the last four years and explicitly stated that his main goal throughout college was not academic or even athletic, but sexual: to get white women to sleep with brown men,” said Olivia Sanches, a member of the rowing team, according to the university's student newspaper.

Sundaram kept referring to the importance of his goal to sleep with 'white women'. “Go brown and turn your frown upside down,” he said repeatedly, like a mantra.

“Go French and your panties get drenched,” he added.

Sudaram said his parents met in India, and immigrated to the United States. This inspiring journey would all be worth it, he explains, if he could only 'hook up with a white girl'.

Sundaram brought up Ghandi at one point in the evening, but if anyone thought that the tone was going to take a more serious note, they were wrong. He noted that Ghandi '“didn’t fast for 20 days so that I could get to America and not sleep with white women', according to Sanchez's report.

“This night was supposed to be about me,” Sanchez wrote. “About all of us. Instead, it was a ‘locker room’: one that I was excluded from since I couldn’t get the joke. The ‘joke’ was never meant for me. Sundaram’s words were actively marginalizing all the women who have worked hard all year for this.”

People began getting up and walking out during the evening. Rev. Mark Poorman, university’s president, remained to see just how far things would go. He wasn't pleased. Poorman told the university newspaper that he was 'appalled' by the comments, which he found 'shocking and offensive'.

Poorman issued a statement to the rest of the university. "I apologize to all of you that this occurred... Clearly we have continuing work to do to educate and raise consciousness.”

Sundaram was promptly dropped from the roster of the tennis team. He got an email from the athletic department that told him his jokes were inappropriate and 'taking away from the focus' of the banquet. The university is also considering whether or not to take disciplinary action against the student.

“I would like to address what happened at the Wally’s last night,” Sundaram wrote in a statement. “I want to apologize for taking away from the focus of the night. The night is meant to celebrate the excellence of student athletes and I would like to apologize if I made any people uncomfortable.”
