UK Family Posed For Pics Next To Live World War II Mine

A UK family is thanking their lucky stars after a trip to the beach where they posed for photographs next to a live, unexploded World War II mine that they thought was a buoy.

Kelly Gravell and her family were visiting a beach near Burry Port, Carmarthenshire last week when they discovered the seaweed-covered object, which her two children proceed to climb on top off and play around with.

Gravell and her husband were shocked when the beach was shut down a few days later after rangers identified the 70-year-old bomb and called for the bomb squad to detonate it.

Gravells Comment On The Near-Disaster

Kelly’s husband Gareth Gravell commented about the close call on social media: “So the buoy my kids were jumping on all weekend turns out to be a WWII bomb. Oops. The tide was up so we discovered what we later learned was the bomb - we just thought it was a buoy.”

Kelly chimed in to say: “We were more interested in the barnacles on it and the kids were looking at them while Gareth noticed that it had a chain on.”

“I even made the joke that it was a big bomb at the time but did not think anything of it. It's only afterwards when the reality has set in that we were actually very lucky. We were close to disaster - it's shocking.”
