Uber Driver Refused to Pick Up Woman in Labor

David Lee claims a Uber driver refused to drive his wife to the hospital when she was in labor.

The unnamed driver reportedly told them he would lose $1,000 a day if she vomited in his car. He also said no other driver would take them--which, they say is against the law. The driver then charged them $13 for his lost time.

Lee said “I don’t blame Uber for one driver’s poor actions, since bad apples can appear in any organization, but I do think that when a company has a culture of bullying their way past laws and regulations, as Uber seems to do, they begin to think they can act with impunity in anything."

In addition, the New York couple was frustrated that Uber could not discuss the individual driver, citing its privacy policy. Lee, a lawyer, said they were finally able to take another Uber car to the hospital. They welcomed a healthy baby boy only a few hours later in November.

Legal experts explain that city and state law forbid New York drivers from refusing women in labor.

Lee said “Uber should have clarified their policies on drivers and women in labor, and confirmed that the driver received appropriate disciplinary action. I’m fortunate enough to know my rights and have access to resources, but I feel for the person who is not as lucky.”

A Uber spokesperson said “Denying service to a passenger in labor is unacceptable: It goes against our code of conduct and the standard of service our riders rely on. We are glad that the rider’s next driver was professional and courteous.”
