Two Men Suspected Of Hate Crime For Damaging Mosque

Cameron S. Capella and Derrik M. Demone, both 18, were arrested Monday because they reportedly vandalized a mosque--the Islamic Center of Burlington on Sunday. Police are investigating the report of malicious vandalism.

The letters "U.S.A" had been spray painted, in red, on the property several times. In addition, eggs were thrown at the building. Both men are from Burlington. They were charged on Monday with malicious destruction of property over $250 and tagging property.

The community gave the police several leads late Sunday night. As a result, the two were tracked down Monday morning. Burlington police chief Michael Kent called the incident a "hate crime."

He went on to say "We were able to quickly close this shameful case involving a hate crime in our community. This behavior is not tolerated in our town and the suspects will be held responsible for their actions."

Police were called to the mosque and religious community center on Lexington St. by a member at 1:45 a.m. on Sunday. The suspects reportedly drove up to the area and stayed for 20 minutes before driving away.
