Two Boys Hand Man A Bag - Speechless When He Realizes What It Is

Some people learn the importance of caring at a very young age. For example, two young brothers in Louisiana have become an inspiration to their city by packing lunch bags for the homeless in their community.

Ten-year-old Derrell Martin and his 9-year-old brother Kyllon decided to commit themselves to a special project when they saw the rate of homelessness in their hometown New Orleans was very high.

Hurricane Katrina destroyed much of the city’s food and shelter in 2005, and a lot of Big Easy residents still live under highways and bridges a decade after the disaster.

The boys’ mother, Kristy Lewis-Martin, says the idea coalesced when the family passed by a local bridge and saw homeless people asking for money on the side of the road.

"I didn’t have any cash but Kyllon had a taco and Derrell handed it to a man that was asking for money," Lewis-Martin explained in an interview with the media. "He was so excited that he danced and showed everyone that he had the taco."

The boys then decided to work together on a project in order to feed the homeless and also include inspirational messages of hope and love.

The name for the organization came from younger brother Kyllon.

The project came to be named “The Helping Lunchbox” because the boys wanted to “help people” and Kyllon also “wanted a new lunchbox.”

When volunteers from the local non-profit B.O.S.S. Youth Outreach Program heard about the young boys’ dedication, they decided they should get involved.

“When the B.O.S.S. organization decided to help they were really into it,” Lewis-Martin noted.

The great news is that Derrell and Kyllon got the community involved and have served more than 200 people do date. The boys goal for The Helping Lunchbox project is to serve another 250 people by August 8th.
