Twitter Chooses To Celebrate Malia Obama's Birthday Over The 4th Of July

With the increasingly divisive political climate in America, many people found it more difficult than usual to celebrate this year’s Independence Day. However, rather than let the national holiday go to waste, hundreds of people took to Twitter to dedicate their celebrations and fireworks to the former first daughter, Malia Obama. Unsurprisingly, many online commenters were unimpressed by such a view. Now, people from both sides of the aisle are becoming embroiled in the controversy.

Malia Obama’s birthday happens to fall on the 4th of July, which is obviously recognized as Independence Day. However, citing their lack of pride in today’s America, many social media users decided not to observe Independence Day, choosing to, instead, celebrate the former first daughter’s birthday. Malia received thousands of tweets from Twitter users, with one user stating that anyone celebrating Independence Day instead of "Malia Obama Day" was “still in 1776.” Chance the Rapper, a close friend of the Obama family, was also quick to celebrate the 19-year-old’s birthday, tweeting “Happy Malia Obama Day”. This tweet alone received almost 289,000 likes in support.

The honoring of Malia’s birthday appears to have caused many to cry foul, with a number of individuals posting their disgust of the celebration. One Twitter user, Aldin Gjekaj, referred to the celebration as a “disgrace to [America],” while Ms. Kelly Campagna, another Twitter user, stated, “Some people who hate America celebrated ‘Malia Obama Day’ instead of Independence Day.”

Despite the huge controversy surrounding her birthday, Malia appeared to be having a blast as she celebrated the occasion with a small group of friends. Taking the small group to a Surf Lodge in Montauk, New York, Malia spent her 19th birthday dancing and indulging in a huge chocolate brownie cake. “She was very mellow and sweet like you would expect,” a witness reported. “She and her girlfriends had a fun time dancing and desserting.”

The soon to be Harvard student was said to have kept her celebrations tame, with “no one drinking,” at the event. “They were dancing and kept wanting to have the music turned up. It was crazy how normal and down-to-earth she seemed. People kept saying Secret Service was there, but they were very discreet. I don’t think most people even realized she was there,” the witness continued.

When Malia announced her college plans, no one was surprised that she would be following in her father’s footsteps. However, rather than deciding to go straight to college, Malia took a gap year: “The President and Mrs. Obama announced today that their daughter, Malia, will attend Harvard University in the fall of 2017 as a member of the class of 2021. Malia will take a gap year before beginning school,” a 2016 White House statement confirmed.

During her gap year, Malia interned for Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein. However, it wasn’t all work and no play for the young teen, who was recently photographed with her sister, Sasha, in Bali while on a family vacation.
