Trump Creates More Controversy While Abroad - Comments On Wife Of French President's Figure

While the Trump Administration has been dealing with a new storm of Russia-themed controversy, President Trump and the First Lady have been in France, celebrating Bastille Day. The French National Day celebrates the highpoint of the French Revolution – the storming of the Bastille. This year, to commemorate Bastille Date, President Trump and his wife, Melania, met with the French President, Emmanuel Macron, and his wife, Brigitte Macron.

Unfortunately, footage of the initial meeting between President Trump and Ms. Macron is going viral for all the wrong reasons. As President Trump held out his hand for a handshake, Ms. Macron seemed to have trouble grasping his hand. After the fumbling handshake, President Trump kissed the First Lady on each cheek and attempted to shake hands again, awkwardly waving their clasped arms in the air.

Considering the occasion, official media sources were quick to upload a video of the encounter onto the French Government’s Facebook account. Unsurprisingly, social media quickly fixated on the clumsy handshake. One Twitter user, Meg Wagner, uploaded a gif of the uncomfortable exchange, writing: “Here's that awkward handshake between Trump and France's Brigitte Macron.”

This is not the first time that President Trump has clumsily greeted a member of the Macron family. During his first meeting with the French President, Trump and Macron shared an uncomfortably long and tight handshake. For President Macron, the white-knuckled handshake was about establishing his independence as France’s leader, saying: "My handshake with him, it's not innocent. It's not the alpha and the omega of politics, but a moment of truth."

Since his inauguration, President Trump’s handshakes have become a source of mockery on social media. The president is routinely ridiculed for his domineering style of handshake, where he either grips very tightly or tries to jerk the other person off balance. Trump’s unconventional handshakes have even caused political controversies, especially when meeting other world leaders. During a meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, President Trump allegedly refused to shake hands.

However, the president’s botched handshake with Ms. Macron has not been the only embarrassing moment of Trump’s trip to France. A video of President Trump complimenting Ms. Macron also surfaced on Facebook. In the video, Trump tells Ms. Macron: “You’re in such good shape…beautiful,” turning to repeat the comment to the French President.

Social media quickly went into an uproar over President Trump’s inappropriate comments to the French First Lady. NBC News Reporter, Bradd Jaffy, uploaded a short video of the bizarre exchange, writing: “Trump tells the First Lady of France, Brigitte Macron: 'You’re in such good shape … beautiful.'”

Since being uploaded to twitter, the video has received a very negative response from online commenters. Alex Berg, a writer for the Huffington Post and Daily Beast, tweeted: “#Trump telling France's First Lady 'you're in such good shape' epitomizes men towing the line between compliment & sexual harassment.” Meanwhile, Jen Siebel Newsom, wrote: “Mr. Trump - Women do not want to hear unsolicited remarks on what you think of their bodies. Its gross, and deeply inappropriate.”
