Throw Away Your Watermelon If It Has Cracks - Here's Why

In the world of vegetables and fruit, bigger usually means chemically modified and not better. According to AWM.com, this is especially true of watermelons. Though most people think to grab the largest watermelon they can find when at the grocery store, you might want to rethink that.

Fertilizers companies didn’t tell Chinese farmers that they were using fertilizer that had a chemical called forchlorfenuron in it. This chemical allows watermelons to grow 20 percent larger at a rapid pace, which leads to larger profits. Farmers eventually caught on when they noticed that their melons were breaking in half and turning into weird shapes. Their taste and texture also seemed artificial, and the majority of the seeds were white instead of black.

The inside of the watermelon looked like an explosion. Though forchlorfenuron was deemed safe in 1980, Director of the Vegetable Research Institute at Qingdao Academy of Agricultural Science Cui Jian stated that it is best to try and stay away from it. Especially since, watermelons are particularly sensitive to chemicals.

The Environmental Protection Agency disagrees and has their own determination about the fertilizer. The EPA says that the fertilizer, which is also used for kiwis and grapes can lead to acute dermal, oral and respiratory toxicity if ingested. It can also lead to fetal mortality and stomach lesions and has proven to be harmful to animals as well as the environment.
