Three 12-Year-Old Students Caught Spiking Teacher's Soda

Three middle school students at Deltona Middle School in Florida are now facing felony charges for allegedly spiking their teacher's soda with spicy hot pepper.

The incident took place on Feb. 23 when one of the 12-year-olds was attempting revenge against her teacher, 52-year-old Jayne Morgan. The day before, Morgan had reportedly sent the girl to the principal's office for dumping glue into another student’s backpack. The students tried to retaliate with the crushed pepper.

Morgan drank from the soda and noticed her throat became hot and scratchy. She then experienced shortness of breath. She poured the soda into a clear plastic bag where she noticed the pepper flakes.

For the rest of the evening, Morgan experienced a sore, scratchy throat and stomach pains. After an investigation was launched, it was found that two other 12-year-old students were involved. One of the students distracted the teacher while the other two poured in the flakes. All three 12-year-old girls were arrested on Feb. 26.

Two students are facing charges of poisoning food or water and tampering with consumer products. In the charging affidavits, investigators wrote: “It should be noted, this act was done in retaliation for the teacher upholding her duties and responsibilities as a teacher, maintaining control of her classroom and attempting to protect the other children from [student's] unacceptable behavior."

All three students are expected to be taken to the Volusia Regional Juvenile Detention Center in Daytona Beach. Morgan said, “My students and I are very close. For the sake of education, for the sake of my school, other teachers in the classroom, and for the sake of students themselves, children need to know there is a right and a wrong. This is illegal. I could have died.”
