Thousands Gather To Mourn Fallen NYPD Officer - And Express Distaste For NYC Mayor

New York City Mayor, Bill de Blasio, has been ignored by hundreds of NYPD police officers. While speaking at the funeral of murdered NYPD Officer Miosotis Familia, several officers turned their backs on de Blasio, outraged over his decision to fly to Hamburg after Officer Familia, a mother to three children, was killed.

Officer Familia was murdered by an anti-cop activist named Anthony Bonds in an unprovoked attack in the Bronx. Mr. Bonds, who allegedly suffers from paranoid schizophrenia, was also shot and killed while he attempted to flee the scene.

However, in the aftermath of Officer Familia’s murder, de Blasio was nowhere to be found, flying to Hamburg to make an unannounced speech at an anti G-20 protest. While lambasting the world’s most powerful leaders, de Blasio complimented the NYPD but failed to mention the recently murdered NYPD officer and mother-of-three.

At Officer Familia’s funeral in the World Changers Church, thousands of New York residents arrived to pay their respects to the dedicated mother and police officer. Hundreds more, many of them NYPD officers, watched the emotional service on broadcast screens.

In an attempt to save public face, de Blasio made an appearance at the funeral, saying: “We've watched with horror these attacks on our police here in New York City and all around our country. It sickens us, and we know they cannot be tolerated, and we know they must end. But in fact, we must end it. It's not a one-way street, my friends. We must help our police in every way, just as we ask them to help us in our moment of need. ... They need us to be their eyes and ears. They need our solidarity and support.”

Despite praising Officer Familia as the epitome of the “American dream,” scores of NYPD officers were unconvinced by his words, accusing him of politicizing Ms. Familia’s death.

However, no such complaints could be directed at the heart-rending eulogies from Ms. Familia’s three children. Genesis, Ms. Familia’s 20-year-old daughter, spoke about her last conversation with Officer Familia, choking back tears as she said: “She said 'I love you, I’m going to work now.' And she gave me a really big, tight hug, and I said, 'I love you, mom'… I asked her for one more hug. She said, 'of course, you can.'"

Ms. Familia’s 12-year-old son, Peter, and his twin sister, Delilah, also spoke at the funeral, emotionally declaring: “She was brave enough to do that knowing that there's consequences, like danger, but she loved us. She wanted to sacrifice for us, so she did it.”

While addressing Officer Familia’s heartbroken family, James O’Neill, the New York Police Commissioner, became visibly emotional as he spoke to Genesis, Peter and Delilah. “Nothing I could say could bring your mom back,” he said. “But I can make you this promise: your mom didn't die in vain. Your mom's legacy will never fade from the importance of memory. Your mom made it her mission to make your home, New York City, a better and safer place for everyone. And I vow to you, we will continue to find our way forward in her honor, because that's what cops do.”
