Thing Missing From Photo Proves Just How Bad Things Are Getting In St Louis

There's a great deal of tension coming to a head in St. Louis these days, and it's being evidenced in unexpected ways.

Judge Timothy Wilson recently delivered a ‘not guilty’ verdict in the trial of former St. Louis police officer, Jason Stockley, who was charged with the first-degree murder of a suspected heroin dealer and African American, Anthony Lamar Smith. Despite avid and aggressive threats from activists, Mr. Wilson justified his verdict with a 30-page decision detailing all the evidence he reviewed - noting explicitly that his duty as an officer was to consider the facts and not political pressures.

Three consecutive nights of protests have seen malls and shopping centers crowded with activist groups, the targeting of homes, including Mayor Lyda Krewson’s residence, and the chaotic convergence of protest groups.

On the Delmar Loop, where protests recently convened, a dozen small business had their windows shattered by rocks or bricks found from the sidewalk. These businesses, most owned by local families, were forced to board up their windows and hope for the best when another protest headed back to Delmar. A select few businesses chose to remain closed and simply cut their losses.

The University City Public Works Department was one step ahead of protestors and vandals, opting to remove brocks and stones from the pavement outside of shops to prevent windows from being smashed in.

With unrest amongst the St. Louis community on the rise, an anonymous business owner has noted that, with the most recent wave of protests on the way, his livelihood, and even his life, are in danger. Despite this, the man still believes that there is good in the city of St. Louis, sharing the following sentiment with the Independent Journal Review:

"Want to know what a peaceful protest really looks like? Go to the Delmar Loop this morning and see the numerous volunteers and business owners of all colors, creeds and backgrounds helping each other after the debacle of last night.

They are sweeping away glass...helping board up breakage, cleaning windows, and being a support to this neighborhood that became a flashpoint hours ago.

These wonderful people protested against lawlessness and chaos. They stood against wanton property damage and hate. They did not cover their faces with anything more than smiles. They are doing their deeds in the light of day and not like cowards under the cover of night.

My store was thankfully untouched besides some chalk writing. I attribute that to the protective hedge so many of you prayed around it, and for that I cannot thank you enough. To steal a phrase from the protestors, THIS is what Justice and Democracy Looks Like!"

While most protestors have peacefully demonstrated through the streets of St Louis, more and more people are beginning to turn violent and destructive. Four police officers have been assaulted and at least 23 individuals have been arrested in relation to crimes committed during the protests.

St. Louis police took to Twitter to discourage protestors, stating, “While we support all first amendment rights, violence and destruction of property is not free speech. Violators subject to arrest.”
