They Adopted Her Even Though Everyone Warned Them Against It - Their Lives Were Forever Changed

An incredible story has been making the rounds about a seriously neglected child that quite simply didn’t have a great head start on life. She survived in unfathomable conditions for a number of years before being rescued, but all hope was not lost. The story teaches us once again that a little bit of hope - and most importantly a lot of love - can turn around even the most heartbreaking situations.

As the San Francisco Globe explains, Danielle was just six-years-old when the Florida Department of Children and Families received a call about a possible child abuse situation. That call didn’t do the situation any justice, as Plant City police detective Mark Holste refers to it as "the worst neglect situation I've ever seen."

She was found in absolutely squalid conditions in a home filled with feces, urine and cockroaches. What’s more, the severely emaciated girl was relegated to a room the size of a closet, and she was still in diapers. Danielle had not developed as a normal, and she was what’s known as a feral child, and it was unclear exactly what the future would hold for her.

"It makes you think about what does quality of life mean? What's the best we can hope for her? After all she's been through, is it just being safe?" recalled Luanne Panacek, executive director of Children's Board of Hillsborough County.

The child was hospitalized and recovered to full health, but there were still some serious developmental issues. That didn’t deter a remarkable couple named Bernie and Diane Lierow from adopting her, and they welcomed her into their home. While there’s still plenty of progress to be made, Danielle has made a remarkable turnaround considering the head start she had in life, and the Lierow’s couldn’t be happier with their adoptive daughter.

"Having Dani in my life, it has been a roller coaster ride, and I don't want to get off," Bernie said.
