Their Honeymoon Cruise Was Going Great Until Shower Started Raining Number Two

After all of the pomp and circumstance of the big day comes to a close, newlywed couples are generally ecstatic to know that the fun has just begun. The knowledge that they’re about to hit the road for a honeymoon can all but guarantee their smiles will last through the night, and there’s a good chance their faces will stay in that position for as long as they’re away.

It’s a perfect time for couples to focus only on each other as they begin their lives anew, and the memories they create are certain to last a lifetime.

Unfortunately, some couples don’t have the best of times on their honeymoon. Many times, that’s through no fault of their own.

Christine Parker and John Shoemaker had their own version of a honeymoon from hell last year, and they’re still pretty fired up about it. The couple set sail aboard the Carnival Triumph, but the good times came to a grinding halt due to a foul stench in their cabin.

As the New York Post shares, their shower began leaking sewage, and the smell was downright overwhelming. Parker shared some thoughts with the Miami Herald, and she’s none too pleased with how the staff onboard handled the stinky situation.

“We didn’t have a good honeymoon. People expect you to come back so excited and we have been fighting with the Carnival staff and smelling poop in our room. We were exhausted and angry,” she explained.

“I understand that that’s their job to minimize it. But what if that stuff had gotten into a cut on our feet and we would have gotten an infection?”

The couple had booked a five-night trip, and they were left with no choice but to use the restrooms in the ship’s spa during their stay.
While the staff acknowledged things weren’t right in their room, they didn’t offer up much of a solution. However, the cruise line did offer up a $300 credit and a 15 percent discount to be used on their next cruise.

When the ship returned to port, it received a failing grade from inspectors with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Vessel Sanitation Program. Carnival spokeswoman Jennifer De La Cruz explains that the Triumph has since been re-inspected and has received a passing grade.

“We take these inspections very seriously and share lessons learned and best practices with every ship in our fleet. We appreciate the work of [United States Public Health] in identifying areas for improvement and we have taken immediate action to address the issues identified during recent ship inspections,” she said.

“Rest assured we will leverage our learnings from this process as a best practice. We remain confident that our shipboard operations, especially in food handling and preparation, are of the highest quality and we are always committed to delivering an exceptional experience to our guests.”

Parker has no intentions of taking the cruise line up on its offer of a discounted cruise anytime soon, and this is yet another black eye for the cruise industry as a whole. While it’s true that the number of negative experiences pales in comparison to the positive ones that cruise line customers enjoy, there seems to be a rash of very public problems in recent times.
