Texas University Professor's Syllabus Goes Viral for Strange Ban

Last week, a University of Texas Rio Grande Valley professor issued a syllabus making an unusual request of students, he asked that students refrain from saying "God bless you" because the professor finds it disruptive. Someone took a snapshot and posted it online, where it soon went viral. Some students even criticized the professor for limiting their religious freedom.

Marcos Villarreal, a student at the university in Edinburg, Texas, said "It's kind of ridiculous, First Amendment, freedom of religion. We shouldn't have to block that out of school." On the other hand, another student Aaron Bravo said "I honestly wouldn't have a problem with it. It shouldn't really be a problem because it's the teacher’s classrooms." The university said in a statement that, "The professor's syllabus sought to identify examples of potentially disruptive behavior the professor believed could hinder the classroom learning environment, including use of cellphones." The University said the statement has since been removed from the syllabus, and the teacher addressed the issue with students.
