Televangelist Claims God Sent Hurricane For One Reason - Stirs Outrage

God created Hurricane Harvey for a specific reason, a televangelist recently suggested.

In a video posted by Right Wing Watch, conservative Christian preacher Jim Bakker declared: “I have felt ― and I was afraid to share it with anybody ― that this flood is from God. It’s a judgment on America somehow.” According to The Huffington Post, a guest on Bakker’s show (Rick Joyner) responded: “We have to stand up against the perversion of our times and call it what it is.”

Later in the program, Bakker told his viewers: “Just remember, God gets the last word. God gets the last word. Be not deceived, God is not mocked.” As the televangelist discussed the devastation in the Houston area, where the hurricane took more than 60 lives, he displayed buckets of food that he was selling for $175.

Bakker is best known for a sex scandal in the 1980s that resulted in the pastor’s tearful resignation from his first Christian television show, “The PTL Club.” When Jessica Hahn accused him of drugging and raping her, Bakker settled the case by giving her nearly $300,000. He admitted he joined Hahn in a hotel room, but denied assaulting her. Bakker was convicted of fraud and conspiracy for his show’s fundraising tactics, including the sale of fake memberships at an expensive hotel. However, the preacher has mounted a comeback. He now sells food and other supplies to survivalists. He warns that people need the materials to be ready for an upcoming period of “tribulation” that will continue for years.

According to The Hill, Bakker predicted last month that Christians would stage a rebellion if the Trump presidency ended in impeachment. “If it happens, there will be a civil war in the United States of America,” he said. “The Christians will finally come out of the shadows, because we are going to be shut up permanently if we’re not careful.” Bakker claimed that members of his faith are losing influence in the United States. He told another minister who was a guest on his show: “God says faith without works is dead. We have to do things, God has been standing with me, and I don’t know about you, it’s time for preachers like you, you’ve been doing it, to stand up and shout out.”

While a few Democrats in the House of Representatives have called for Trump’s impeachment, there is little momentum on Capitol Hill for such an extreme action. That could change if Justice Department special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation finds that the Trump campaign colluded with Russia to interfere in the 2016 presidential campaign. Mueller and his legal team also are looking into the Trump Organization’s finances and determining whether the president obstructed justice when he fired FBI Director James Comey. Trump has admitted more than once that he sacked the bureau chief in an attempt to quash the Russian election-meddling probe.

Bakker, a native of Muskegon, Mich., often appeared on his 1980s program with his wife, Tammy Faye. They began their televangelism career in 1966, on the Christian Broadcasting Network that Pat Robertson founded.
