Teens Steal A Car, Die In The Process - Police End Up Getting Blamed For Their Deaths

It was a tragic night for three teens who made bad decisions. The girls stole a car, and crashed it into a swampy Florida pond. Dashcam footage of the scene have some wondering if the police could have done something more to rescue the girls.

The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office released the dashboard camera footage taken by police after the crash. Instead of rushing into the waters, the footage shows deputies standing around talking about the submerged Honda Accord.

One deputy spoke to other officers sitting in a patrol car.

"It's going all the way down. It's almost fully submerged," one of the officers in the car said. "I hear them yelling, I think!"

"They're done. They're done. They are sig 7, dude," said the one out of his vehicle. Sig 7 stands for 'signal 7', the code meaning 'dead person.'

"Did you hear yelling? I thought I heard yelling as it was going down," one of the deputies repeated.

The video shows no rescue attempts and doesn't capture any discussions. Sheriff Bob Gualtieri says the deputies did try to get into the water, but the muddy conditions in the dark made it too difficult and dangerous.

In the dash cam, officers could be seen walking back and forth toward the crash site, some beltless and one without a shirt. "Myself and other deputies began to enter the swampy water... the fact that the vehicle was still moving, along with the unstable ground and excessive water vegetation, made a rescue too risky for those involved," said a report from Deputy Jeff Clement, one of the officers at the scene.
