Teen Killed Seven-Year-Old Student So School Would Delay Exams

In India, a tragedy unfolded when the body of a seven-year-old boy was discovered. Someone had slit the child's throat. After investigation, police learned that the senseless crime was committed by a 16-year-old boy who attends the same school. The teen was hoping that news of a dead student at the school would make his teacher postpone tests.

The murder and reason behind the vicious attack sent shockwaves throughout Gurugram in Northern India. Little Pradyuman Thakur, a seven-year-old student at the Ryan International School in Gurgaon, was found dead in a school bathroom in September. The little boy had been killed in a bloody attack with a knife, and someone had slit his throat.

Initially, authorities thought a bus conductor named Ashok Kumar was responsible for the young child's death. They believed he might have sexually assaulted the child, then decided to cover up for it by killing the young boy.

Kumar had been at the school for only eight months. Police interrogated the man and say he eventually confessed to the crime.

Parents were so angry over the violent crime that they stormed the school and demanded the managers be arrested just for hiring Kumar. The crumbling public school system has led to the overgrowth of poorly regulated private schools, and parents demanded accountability. Police wearing riot gear were put on duty to guard the building, and there were many instances of violence.

Police began investigating the school for negligence, only to discover the real culprit. A 16-year-old boy, whose name is being withheld, is the real killer. A twist in the case led authorities to solid evidence that a teen student killed the younger boy. According to police, the murderer is an 'academically weak teenager, whose motive was to postpone the examination and a forthcoming parent-teacher meeting'.

"On the basis of minute inspection of crime, analysis of the CCTV footage and movements of the students near the scene of crime, and questioning of students, teachers and other staff of the school on 7.11.2017, the CBI has identified and apprehended juvenile in conflict with law at 2330 hours,” read a statement from investigators. “He has admitted his involvement in committing the murder of Master Pradyuman Thakur on 08.09.2017 in ground floor boys washroom of Ryan International School, Gurugram in presence of his father, independent witnesses, welfare officer of the CBI."

"He admitted during questioning that he wanted to shut the school to defer the exams and meeting," said an investigator in a statement.

For now, Kumar remains in custody and the teen, whose name has not been released, is being held at a juvenile custody center. Police are continuing the investigation but believe the teen boy will face murder charges.

The botched investigation has renewed outrage in the locals. Kumar has retracted his confession and says that the confession was coerced.

Police investigators in the region have been accused of sloppy police work, such as jumping to conclusions, rushing to make an arrest before the evidence is thoroughly examined, and not conducting forensic examinations of the evidence in a timely manner.
