Teen Applies For College And Gets Shock Of A Lifetime

It wasn’t until Julian Hernandez was applying for college that he learned he had been kidnapped as a child.

The teen learned his social security number couldn’t be verified when filling out college applications at his high school in Ohio. With the help of his guidance counselor, he then learned he was listed in the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children database, USA Today reports.

Hernandez’s father, Bobby Hernandez, allegedly told his son’s mother he would take the boy to school in Alabama 2002, but never returned. Police said the father had withdrawn money from a bank account, and fled with the child’s possessions.

Hernandez’s parents were not married, and police dubbed it as a non-custodial abduction.

"I've been doing this 25 years and it's something I've never experienced before," said Lt. Johnny Evans, an officer in the Birmingham, AL. “Investigators spent tireless hours doing everything they could to try to find him."

Bobby Hernandez, 23, has been charged in Ohio with providing false information for obtaining a fake identification card and was held on bail. He also faces charges of interference of custody in Alabama, which could carry a one to 10 year prison term.

Since Julian Hernandez is 18-years-old, he isn’t required to live with his mother.
