Teacher's Encounter With Border Patrol Goes Viral

A teacher on vacation with her family driving through New Mexico and was stopped at a Border Patrol checkpoint. The Border Patrol agents asked her a simple question, but the woman refused to answer. When one agent said she should be proud to say that she and her family are American, the teacher called it 'Nationalist propaganda'.

Shane Parmely, who teaches in a San Diego middle school, was furious when she was stopped at a Border Patrol checkpoint. An agent, doing his job, asked Parmely if she was a U.S. citizen.

Parmely refused to answer. She had someone in her car film the exchange and later posted the series of videos to the internet.

“Are we crossing a border?” Parmely asked the officer, then told him that she doesn't believe she has to answer since she wasn't crossing it. The agent tried to explain to her that she still is required, by law, to answer the question.

“So, if I just come through and say, 'Yes, I’m a citizen,' I can just go ahead?” Parmely asked the officer. “So, if I have an accent, and I'm brown, can I just say, 'Yes,' and go ahead, or do I have to prove it?”

Parmely then berated the officer for what she believes are racial injustices. “I have a bunch of teacher friends who are sick of their kids being discriminated against," she said.

The teacher failed to notice that one could hardly call it 'discrimination' for Border Patrol agents to treat everyone the same. With her blonde hair, blue eyes and perfect English, Parmely was being treated exactly as her 'brown' friends.

The Border Patrol Agent pulled out a card with a Supreme Court ruling that spells out the law, and not a violation of Parmely's rights: "The Border Patrol's routine stopping of a vehicle at a permanent checkpoint located on a major highway away from the Mexican border for brief questioning of the vehicle's occupants is consistent with the Fourth Amendment, and the stops and questioning may be made at reasonably located checkpoints in the absence of any individualized suspicion that the particular vehicle contains illegal aliens."

Parmely also accused the agents of an illegal search, but the agent said the dog did an 'open air' search by sniffing around her car, and did not go into her car.

Another agent noted that it has nothing to do with 'brown' people'; that Parmely could be Swedish, Canadian or some other European nationality, or even American. They are required to ask the same question.

After being detained for a while, Border Patrol agents were satisfied that all people in the car were Americans. “You guys should be proud of that, especially for the young kids in the back,” said the agent.

"And what's up with this dude's straight up nationalist propaganda?" Parmely later wrote on Facebook, concluding that securing the border "can be reduced to: Fascism > Terrorism."

Terrorist victims everywhere just rolled over in their graves.
