Teacher Punished For Unpatriotic Act

A high school English teacher in Illinois has lost his job because he stepped on a U.S. flag during a class, according to Fox News.

Without a single dissenting vote, the Martinsville School Board decided to dismiss 26-year-old Jordan Parmenter for his disrespectful behavior on May 15, the Mattoon Journal Gazette originally reported.

The teacher told the newspaper that he attended the board meeting, during which all six panel members grilled him with questions. He had been on leave since the incident occurred, and wrote a letter of apology to the board.

In an earlier interview with the Journal Gazette, Parmenter explained that a student objected to him using a small U.S. flag as a pointer. The teacher responded by dropping the flag on the floor and stepping on it, to demonstrate the concept of free speech.

Parmenter said he immediately realized he shouldn’t have done it, and apologized to his students. "What I did was never intended as a show of disrespect to our country, to our veterans, or to anyone, nor would I ever do or say anything with that intention,” he told the newspaper. “I love my country and have nothing but the utmost respect for those who serve i
