Tattoo Artist Offers Survivors Of Domestic Violence Free Tattoos

For some people, tattoos are a means of expression. For others, they're a way of making a terrible memory bearable. If you're a victim, you might even be able to get your tattoo for free.

Flavia Carvalho, a tattoo artist in Brazil, offers free services to victims of domestic violence and survivors of cancer. If you have a terrible scar after a tragic incident, Carvalho will do her best to transform it into something beautiful and empowering.

“I started the project quite recently, and I had no idea it would receive this much media attention,” Carvalho said to the Huffington Post. “It began very spontaneously. As I said, my services are a hundred percent voluntary, and the only “cost” women need to invest is to choose a design for their tattoos!”

Women left with scars after being stabbed, shot and beaten have to deal with a daily reminder of their pain. Likewise, for women who were left scarred after undergoing mastectomies. Carvalho wanted to ease the pain of those women by covering up the scars with beautiful images.

Most women choose flowers, but they're free to pick whatever is meaningful. The result is artwork that reminds a woman of the beauty in her life, rather than the pain.
