Stunning Recreation Of Iconic Declaration Of Independence Painting Reveals A Multicultural America

A clever recreation of a famous ‘Declaration of Independence’ painting has seen a multicultural America come together just in time for 4th of July celebrations. The advertising campaign and subsequent image included a number of direct descendants of America’s founding fathers, recreating an exact image of what their ancestors began some 241 years ago.

Mr. John Trumbull’s historic ‘Declaration of Independence’ painting depicts the creation of the Declaration of Independence by several white men in 1776. The original painting shows Mr. Thomas Jefferson presenting the first draft of the document to Congress, which was later signed by 56 men. In 2017, the image depicts a diverse group of people ranging in age and color.

The advertising campaign, completely organized by Ancestry.com, saw a team working for hours on end tracking down and verifying the identities of the descendants of Thomas Jefferson and other founding forefathers of the United States. Among the group sat the seventh great-granddaughter of Mr. Benjamin Franklin, the fifth great-grandson of Thomas Jefferson, the fifth great-granddaughter of Benjamin Rush as well as the eighth great-grandson of William Hooper.

The sixth great-grandson of President Thomas Jefferson noted that the recreation of the painting was imperative in highlighting the importance of cultural and collective history to the American people: “Through my family, I am part of history. Through the recreation of that historic moment, I feel like I’m making history - it shows how much our country has changed and how diverse and beautiful America’s family really is.”

Mr. Lanier went on to emphasize the presence of a multicultural ‘American family’, noting, “When you see the new picture, the new image, it’s a picture of diverse people. Black, Hispanic, white, Native American- a little bit of everything – Asian, and that’s more of a representation of this country.”

With the words of the Declaration being brought to the forefront of Independence Day, Mr. Lanier believes that it is important now, more than ever, to realize that while the phrase “all men are created equal” is a “powerful statement”, it does not “ring true for a lot of people in [America].” Mr. Lanier went on to push the importance of bringing about equality across all of America, stating: “they don’t feel that, sometimes I don’t feel that in certain environments, but I think it’s something to strive for. It’s something we can, as a country, try to work hard to get to.”

Another member of the group known as Andrea Livingston, only recently discovered that she was the eighth great-granddaughter of Philip Livingston; Ms. Livingston is also half Filipino. “It’s a point of pride,” Ms. Livingston confessed, “…but I think we have a long way to go. The ideas that they were creating, the ideas that they were putting into words, we still need to strive to make those ideas real.”

The creators of the advertising campaign, Droga5, have released a statement following the massive amounts of positive support for the ad, with Executive Creator Direct Tim Gordon stating, “We’re really humbled to have created a campaign that shines a spotlight on America’s modern-day diversity and our past. Not only does the campaign highlight how connected we are…. It proves that diversity isn’t just something we value; it is part of who we are.”
