A College Student Was Forced To Leave The Mall Because Her Outfit Was Too 'Revealing'

A college student was left outraged when she was escorted from a local shopping mall because she was supposedly inappropriately dressed. The 20-year-old woman was confronted by security guards in Arden Fair Mall, who told her that she was violating the shopping center’s dress code, and that she needed to leave the premises.

Ms. Demetriana Miles was shopping at Arden Fair Mall in Sacramento, California when she was escorted from the premises because her “bra was showing.” In a now-removed Facebook post, Ms. Miles relayed the incident, which has since gone viral:

“Today I wore this outfit to Arden Fair Mall,” Ms. Miles wrote, accompanying the post with a photo of the simple AC/DC shirt and pants she was wearing. “A white, female security guard saw me and noticed my bra was showing. Instead of letting me know so I could pull my shirt down, she asked a scooter security guard to tell me it was against the dress code.”

Unfortunately, Ms. Miles isn’t the only young woman facing unwarranted criticism over how they are dressed. Another college student, known as Ms. Hannah Pewee, 20, was dressed in a ‘Finding Nemo’ tank top and denim shorts when security guards at Woodland Mall in Kentwood, Michigan, asked her to leave because another shopper complained that she was “inappropriately dressed.”

In another viral post to Facebook, Ms. Pewee detailed the incident, stating, “As many of you know, it is NINETY degrees outside today in West Michigan. Aka, really hot. So, of course, I decided to dress for the weather: shorts and a tank top. But apparently, how I was dressed was too ‘slutty’ for the public, as I was kicked out of the Woodland Mall today.”

Ms. Pewee, who was unaware of the shopping mall’s dressed code at the time of the incident, went quietly with the security officers, revealing, “I had no idea what the mall’s clothing policy was.” However, when she discovered that the mall’s policy simply stated that “appropriate attire, including shirts and shoes, is required. Clothing with inappropriate words, phrases or graphics is not permitted and is subject to mall management approval.”

She was outraged, stating in her post that she was “so angry… I felt so embarrassed I almost cried.”

“The Woodland Mall should be ashamed of themselves,” Ms. Pewee continued, asking for the mall to issue a formal apology. “It’s my body, and its hot outside! I’m not going to show up in jeans and a sweater, sorry. Don’t like it? Look away! I was out having a fun time with my sister and next thing I know, I’m out on the street. Slut-shaming how girls are dressed is deplorable and outdated, it needs to stop.”

The Woodland Mall issued a statement of apology to Ms. Pewee as well as addressing an angry shopper who posted a negative comment on their Facebook page. The statement read:

“Yesterday we reached out to the shopper to personally apologize and come to a resolution. We also addressed hundreds of comments across social media, but we’d still like to make a public apology for unintentionally embarrassing a shopper who was asked to leave our Mall. We can assure you that the enforcement of our dress code was solely motivated by complaints from other shoppers of inadequate clothing coverage not reflected in the photo posted online. We dropped the ball by enforcing a dress code that didn’t take into consideration current summer trends. We also apologize to our community for the way in which this situation was handled.”
