Struggling Father Makes Tough Decision To Do The Right Thing - Gets Rewarded

Gerrell McAllister has been having a rough go of things of late, but it looked like his prayers had been answered when he received an unexpected windfall on Paypal. Alas, the funds had been sent to the wrong recipient, and that left McAllister with a decision to make. Did he withdraw the funds and hope nobody noticed? Or should he do the right thing and track down the rightful owner?

As the Independent shares, he chose option number two, and he’s now receiving some immense praise for his honesty. The money was intended for Melissa Trusler as a birthday gift, but her father mistakenly sent it to her old phone number. That’s how it wound up in McAllister’s account, and Trusler shared the amazing story on social media.

"Sharing a story from this morning.... My father sent me $$ via PayPal as a bday present to help with a couch I just bought. Due to changes in phone numbers etc. the $$ went to someone else,” she wrote.

McAllister had reversed the charges - even though he could’ve really used the cash right then and there - and Melissa was sure to reach out and thank him.

“This person reversed the $$, I thanked him and he sent me this note: 'You're so very welcome! But if you could tell your family and friends that a low income 28 year old Black man from Tacoma with a 5 year old daughter returned your money, I would find that helpful in improving race relations while reaffirming the dope ass culture we as Western Washingtonians have worked so hard to cultivate. And that, in turn, would help me to stop kicking myself in the ass for remaining morally sound through the tough times my family and I are experiencing at the moment, lol. In short, share the story, spread the love. Thank you,'” her post continued.

Melissa decided to go one step further and share McAllister’s email account in case anyone wanted to donate to him in his time of need, and he has been pleasantly surprised to have received some really nice gestures.

"I do receive an email every time someone makes a donation and I check the message. I just care about the message because people are sending some great, uplifting stuff and I'm glad to be an inspiration because they're inspiring me in return," he said.

He notes that things are little tough right now, as he’s caring for his young daughter and working as a cashier, but there wasn’t much of a choice for him to make.

“To me it was kind of a no-brainer,” he said. “I knew it wasn’t mine. Nobody would send that amount without knowing me.”

As for his daughter, she was pretty proud of her pops for making the right call.

“She thinks it’s great. She loves the fact that I’m as caring as she is, because she’s super caring. She cares about everything,” he said. “She loves it, and she got the message right away. I didn’t even have to explain it to her.”
